Step Into Your Prime: Embrace Aging and Self-Confidence in the Workplace
May 04, 2023Aging is inevitable, and with each passing year, we are reminded of the changes that come with it, including changes in the workplace. While it can be challenging to adapt to these changes, aging in the workplace can be an opportunity to find new meaning and reinvigorate the idea of what you truly want. We recently sat down with Diana Place, Founder of Third Act Quest to learn more about what it means to be in your third Act and our steps towards creating meaningful change in your life.
Reframe Your Thinking
“People are so stuck in their own beliefs about themselves that are going to hold them back.”
When Jenny and Diana sat down for a conversation about aging and women in the workplace the first step that they both agreed on was working on your limiting beliefs.
One of the most challenging aspects of aging in the workplace is dealing with the negative stereotypes associated with getting older. We are often told that we are "past our prime" and "too old to learn new things," but this is simply not true. Instead of focusing on what you can't do, try to find new ways to reframe your thinking. You have a wealth of experience to share and offer a new perspective on challenges that your employer is facing. By embracing your wisdom and expertise, you can find renewed purpose and motivation in your work.
Embrace Lifelong Learning
Whether you decide to take on a new hobby or pursue a degree, continuing to learn and grow with confidence can be a significant way to transition into your third act. Diana shared: “Confidence is very easily read by those around you, when you are confident, you are received in a much different way and your age matters less.” Take the time to explore educational opportunities and find out what works best for you. You may register for a class, start a podcast, develop an online course or volunteer in your community.
Open up your Creative Spirit
Don't be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to your career. Women of all ages are increasingly embracing the entrepreneurial spirit, starting their own businesses or consulting firms. They may get creative and propose a brand new role for the organization they work for. This may seem daunting, but it's important to remember that you have a wealth of experience and knowledge that can be leveraged in innovative and exciting ways.
Take Control of Your Story
Finally, the most critical aspect of embracing your third act is taking control of your own story. Don't let fear, ageism, or any other external factor dictate your career path. Instead, focus on your strengths and values, and create your own narrative. Diana shared her story in the workplace and vocalized her biggest lesson: “I finally just said: I have to have a whole life, I can’t give over my top tier energy to some company (...) Make sure where you’re working resonates with your values.”
The best is yet to come my friend, you have one life to live and only you can decide how it’s going to be.
